The Power of Prayer

In 1982, I heard Brother Andrew present a bold prayer project at Hospital Christian Fellowship: “We are going to launch a Seven-Year Jericho Prayer March to bring down the Iron Curtain and open up Russia and Eastern Europe to the Gospel!” At the time, I remember being somewhat bewildered. I had been to the Berlin Wall and seen the Iron Curtain. Like many others in the 1980s, I was convinced that the Iron Curtain was a permanent fact of life and that it would be up until Jesus returned. However, seven years later, in 1989, we saw the culminative effect of that concentrated focus of persistent prayer, as the Berlin Wall came down and the Iron Curtain collapsed and all of Eastern Europe and Russia were opened up for freedom of religion! 

“If you abide in Me and My Words abide in you, you will ask what you desire and it shall be done for you.”

Frequently we hear expressions of exasperations against the teaching of History.

“What possible relevance could all those events of long ago have for me today?”

Well, take 9/11. Did those responsible for the terror attacks 17 years ago just choose an arbitrary date for the aircraft hijackings and attacks on 11 September 2001? Those who know the history of Islamic Jihad can point out that the 11^th of September is a most significant date for Jihadists. Tune into our programme and learn what else significantly happened on 11 September. It is an extraordinary story of Christian courage against all odds, as seen during the siege of Malta and the siege of Vienna. It includes the origin of croissants, bagels and cappuccinos.

Tonight we will be discussing strategies for local churches to pray for and support missionaries. We want to be people who are fervent and effective in prayer. God’s people should pray specific, focused prayers according to the will of God. Similarly, we want to be people who support missions as good stewards of the resources God has entrusted to us. Many wonder how they can know who to support and how to support them. We will discuss all these issues and provide practical advice.

“Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest”
